Kill Bill
Get used to dying, it's inevitable
No one wants to die, it's understandable, you live a long time you get used to living, dying is an inconvenience. It's the same for the ego. Every time you feel pain, it's usually a sign some part of you dies. There's a grief process, first shock, then anger, then... well you know the rest.
The ego doesn't much like being killed, it's uncomfortable, do it enough times and it gets stuck at the point of anger. That brings about resentment. It's how our species respond to tyranny, it gets mad and it gets even. It's why we watch revenge movies, like Inglorious basterds or Kill Bill.
The worst part is when death is inflicted upon you by someone else, perhaps that's why Ghosts are a thing. The manifestation of a once-living person seeking to enact revenge.
But that's just half the story...
Resentment can destroy, but it can also build. Perhaps both are the same thing. Either way, something gets replaced, it can be you, or it can be the world. It's a tricky thing to work through.
